Froome takes Giro stage as Yates extends overall lead

Chris Froome produced a magnificent performance to take victory on the Monte Zoncolan in stage 14 of the Giro d'Italia, which is still led by Simon Yates.

Having struggled so far in the Giro, Froome appeared back to his best on the toughest stage of the race so far.

On one of the hardest climbs in Europe, the four-time Tour de France winner worked with teammate Wout Poels in the early stages before attacking with five kilometres to go.

He was able to open up a gap which only Yates looked like closing, with the pink jersey extending his lead over Tom Dumoulin in the general classification.

Yates looked as though he might overhaul Froome when he attacked with three minutes to go, but in the end he did not quite have enough and finished six seconds back.

Defending champion Dumoulin, who is second on the general classification, crossed the line 37 seconds back after working his way up the climb at his own pace.

As a result, Yates now holds a lead of 1min 24sec over the Dutchman, with Domenico Pozzovivo, who finished third on the stage, also now third in the GC.

Froome is up to fifth overall, 3min 10sec behind his compatriot.

The race continues on Sunday with a medium mountain stage before a rest day and the crucial time trial on Tuesday.
