Franklin ambition gets World Cup boost

Mallory Franklin's push for Olympic selection in both canoe and kayak grew in strength with silver at World Cup.

After her silver success in K1 yesterday on Augsburg’s waters, the Ascot speedster showed her traditional prowess in the canoe discipline will not suffer as a result of her dual ambition.

Last down the course, Franklin clocked 115.65 seconds to nip onto the C1 podium a tenth quicker than third-placed Brazilian Ana Satila.

“I’m happy with my placings and obviously two silvers is amazing,” said Franklin.

“I’ve had a really good season so far.  My kayak results have been pretty solid, I've really enjoyed it and that's the most important part. "I knew it would take me longer to get to the medals in kayak as it is a more competitive discipline than C1.

“Yesterday was my first ever kayak medal so it’s great to have another first today,” Negotiating the first half of the run without alarm, the 24-year-old was assured on both upstream sections of the Munich course.

She suffered a scare on the tricky final gate, as did dominant eventual gold medallist Jessica Fox, but emerged unscathed to earn her fifth medal of the World Cup series.

As a result, Franklin knocked fellow Brit Kimberley Woods off bronze medal position despite the Rugby-born racer’s time of 121.58.

Woods, reigning C1 team world champion in the same boat as Franklin, stormed through her semi-final in third.

Elsewhere, Olympic champion Joe Clarke narrowly missed out on completing a hat-trick of medals at all three stages of the World Cup series but settled for a fourth-placed finish in K1.

Clarke, from Stoke-on-Trent, was highly aggressive from the first gate and negotiated the tricky wall on the tenth gate – clocking 97.08.

Bradley Forbes-Cryans finished 12th in the K1 semi, missing out on a place in the final, as Chris Bowers ended in 21st. Sportsbeat 2018
