Fowler and Selby guaranteed bronze at worlds; Evans out

Anthony Fowler and Andrew Selby are both guaranteed at least bronze at the AIBA World Boxing Championships however there was heartache for Olympic silver medallist Fred Evans.

Fowler got the better of Germany’s Stefan Haertel, who like Selby and Evans competed at London 2012 last summer, in their middleweight quarter-final clash in Kazakhstan.

Meanwhile flyweight world No.1 Selby ensured his place in another major championship semi-final with a fine victory over Ilyas Suleimenov and his home crowd in Almaty.

Selby, who became the first Brit ever to defend a European amateur title earlier this year, is bidding to better his silver medal won at the last World Championships in Baku in 2011.

However there was to be no such luck for London 2012 welterweight silver medallist Evans as the judges ruled his German opponent Arajik Marutjan a unanimous winner in their quarter-final.
