Five to follow on day nine of the Olympic Games

Two major champions are going for Olympic gold today - Andy Murray in the men’s singles tennis and overnight leader Justin Rose in the golf.

It promises to be another day of packed action with Team GB athletes competing in 12 sports across Rio.

Tennis, Men’s singles gold medal match (not before 7.30pm UK time)

Andy Murray has been making history ever since he burst on the scene as a fresh-faced teenager, and now the Scot will be hoping for more of the same in Rio.

No man has ever won back-to-back Olympic tennis singles titles, but Murray is now just three sets away from doing exactly that.

He saw off the challenge of fourth seed Kei Nishikori of Japan with a 6-1, 6-4 semi-final victory to advance to the showpiece.

Standing in his way of another piece of history is Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro after he beat Rafael Nadal 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 in a classic.

But 29-year-old Murray is arguably in the form of his life having won his second Wimbledon title as well as reaching the finals of both the Australian and French Opens – the latter for the first time in his career – and will have his sights set on another piece of history.

Cycling Track, men’s sprint (9.04pm)

He has had to contend with the shadow of Sir Chris Hoy looming over him for his entire career, but sprint cyclist Jason Kenny can move one step closer to matching his record on Sunday - 24 hours after his wife-to-be struck also gold.

Kenny already has already shone in the Rio Olympic Velodrome, having set an Olympic record in men’s team sprint qualifying.

That time was bettered by New Zealand shortly afterwards, but Kenny would enact some revenge before the night was out as he, Philip Hindes and Callum Skinner pipped them to the line and the gold medal in the final.

That moved Kenny, 28, on to four Olympic gold medals – just two shy of Hoy’s tally – and he will have high hopes of making it five in the individual sprint, where he faces team-mate in the final.

Boxing, women’s middleweight preliminaries (9.15pm)

Savannah Marshall arrived at London 2012 as the world champion and with high hopes of celebrating the inclusion of women’s boxing on the Olympic programme by picking up gold.

However, it wasn’t to be as a quarter-final defeat to Marina Volnova of Kazhakstan crushed her dreams.

But fast forward four years and Marshall is in Brazil kicking off the women’s boxing at Rio 2016 with her middleweight fight with Sweden’s Anna Laurell Nash.

Since London, Marshall has been unseated as world champion – she took bronze earlier this year – but is the reigning Commonwealth gold medallist.

Golf, Round 4 (11.30am)

Justin Rose declared Open champion Henrik Stenson the ‘man to beat’ in Rio as golf made a triumphant return to the Olympic programme.

And it appears he was taking his own advice as the 2013 US Open winner leads the Swede by one shot heading into the final round.

Gymnastics Artistic, men’s pommel horse final (7.34pm)

Sebastian Coe versus Steve Ovett was a momentous Battle of Britain played out on the Olympic stage, and on Sunday we will be treated to another memorable occasion as the men battle it out for pommel horse gold.

Qualifying in top spot was Max Whitlock, the London 2012 bronze medallist and reigning world champion.

But second and just 0.100 points behind was teammate Louis Smith, who has some pedigree on the apparatus himself having upgraded his bronze from Beijing 2008 to a silver four years ago in London – one place ahead of Whitlock.
