Farah aims for fifth Great North Run title

Sir Mo Farah is bidding to make history next month after announcing he will attempt to win a fifth straight Great North Run.

The four-time Olympic champion won the half-marathon in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 and will once again be on the streets of Newcastle on September 9.

Farah switched from the track, where he won two Olympic golds at both London 2012 and Rio 2016, to the road following the 2017 World Championships and so far the transition has been a smooth one.

He finished third in April’s London Marathon, comfortably beating the British record, and now he is hoping for further success on home soil.

“I can’t wait to come back to Newcastle and race again,” the 35-year-old said.

“It’s something I look forward to every year, the crowds are always unbelievable and it’s a good course for racing.

“To be the best in the world you have to beat the best and it’s going to be no different here. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Farah’s best time at the Great North Run stands at 59m22s, which he ran in 2015, but the course record belongs to Kenya’s Martin Mathathi – who won in 58m56s in 2011.

The race goes from Newcastle to South Shields and is the largest half-marathon in the world.
