Edwards bows out

Dartford's Kelly Edwards bowed out of the judo women's under-48kg competition after defeat to Japan's top seed Tomoko Fukumi.

Edwards took the fight to Fukumi in the second-round clash, having received a first-round bye.

Edwards was involved in plenty of groundwork but the Japan judoka landed a scoring throw midway through the contest, which was followed up with a hold-down for victory.

Edwards hopes London 2012 will prove the first step of her Olympic career.

"She is a top player, but it is still disappointing," said the Briton.

"The atmosphere here was electric. I have never heard a crowd like that, and it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

"It was invaluable experience, I am only 21 and it will put me in great stead for the European and World Championships up to Brazil in 2016 and for maybe two more Olympic Games after that."
