Double gold for GB at Sailing World Cup Series

James Peters and Fynn Sterritt capped a rousing return to form with gold in the 49er class at the Sailing World Cup Series Enoshima in Japan.

A win in the double-points medal race sealed first place, continuing Britain's domination of racing at the Tokyo 2020 venue this week.

The result is particularly sweet for the pair - Sterritt underwent surgery after sustained a knee injury during the Princess Sofia Trophy regatta in Palma earlier this year.

Having been ruled out of several key races in the Olympic qualification campaign, the 29-year-old was delighted to lay down a marker on his comeback.

“We’re over the moon – ecstatic,” said Sterritt.

“It’s been an up and down week. We were really consistent early on in the regatta then struggled a bit, but to win like this is such a great feeling.

“We really found a groove today. We knew it was going to be a tricky race but we stayed calm. We knew we could win under pressure, and we proved it today.”

There was yet more gold for GB as Elliot Hanson wrapped up victory in the laser class ahead of tomorrow’s medal race.

The Cheshire racer commands an unassailable 43-point lead over New Zealand’s Thomas Saunders in second, going into the final day of racing knowing he is already champion.

This offers a salve to the 24-year-old’s wounds after he missed out on the podium at the recent world championships.

“It’s an amazing feeling to perform so dominantly on the Olympic waters,” said Hanson.

“It didn’t sink in how disappointed I was to let my medal slip away at the world championships in Aarhus until I got home.

“After a bad performance there’s nothing better than another event to throw yourself into to bounce back, so I was really fired up for this one.”

Elsewhere a fifth-place for John Gimson and Anna Burnet in today’s racing saw them finish fifth overall.

Bryony Shaw fell from second to fourth in the RS:X windsurfing standings, whilst Emma Wilson was sixth.

Charlotte Dobson and Saskia Tidey had to settle for fourth in the 49er FX after an eighth-place finish in today’s racing, whilst Sophie Weguelin and Sophie Ainsworth came eighth.

Hannah Snellgrove is just three points off third in the laser radial class ahead of the medal race, whilst Ali Young lost her lead in the standings, slipping to eighth overall and out of contention.

Rio gold medallist Giles Scott is second in the finn class heading into tomorrow’s medal race on what is the event’s final day, whilst his compatriot Ed Wright is third and Ben Cornish eighth.

In the women’s 470 Hannah Mills and Eilidh McIntyre sit fifth, harbouring hopes of climbing onto the podium in the medal race, whilst there are no Brits in the men’s equivalent after Martin Wrigley and James Taylor, and Luke Patience and Chris Grube finished 18th and 22nd overall.
