Disappointment for Edmund after Roland Garros defeat

Kyle Edmund tried to take the positives despite a heart-breaking third-round defeat to Fabio Fognini in five sets at the French Open on Saturday.

The British No.1 has enjoyed a strong clay-court season and had his chances in this match, leading two sets to one.

But the experienced Italian had too much for him in the end, triumphing 6-3, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the fourth round.

Edmund was understandably disappointed, but insisted there were no regrets at letting the lead slip.

He said: “To lose a five-set match is disappointing and you are a little bit down because you have put a lot of effort and emotion into the match.

“But it just didn’t go my way - that’s sport, that’s tennis. I’ve won a few tight five-setters this year but this wasn’t to be.

“I accept it because I tried my best and was playing a quality player.

“It’s the best clay-court season, in terms of results, so far in my career so that’s always a positive.

“I reached my first Tour final, beat some good players, always won matches at the tournaments – apart from Monte Carlo – so I’m going in the right direction.”

On a tough day for the Brits there was also disappointment in the men’s and women’s doubles as Jamie Murray and Heather Watson were knocked out.

Murray and partner Bruno Soares of Brazil were back to resume their match against Maximo Gonzalez and Nico Jarry that was stopped by the rain on Friday.

The No.4 seeds dropped the first set, and despite fighting back to force a decider, eventually went down 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

And it was a similar story for Watson and her German partner Tatjana Maria, who also lost in three sets.

Up against sixth seeds Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic, they were beaten 6-1, 2-6, 7-5.
