Diamond shine narrowly escapes Asher-Smith

Triple European champion Dina Asher-Smith just missed out on adding a Diamond League title to her sparkling 2018 medal haul.

The 22-year-old, who won 100m and 200m golds, as well as being a part of Great Britain’s victorious 4x100m relay side at the European Championships in Berlin earlier this month, finished second in her final 100m race of the season.

Asher-Smith, who also won Commonwealth Games bronze this year, was one of the pre-race favourites ahead of the women’s 100m at the Diamond League finals in Zurich but crossed the line second in 11.08 seconds behind the Ivory Coast's Murielle Ahoure, who came home in 11.01.

She also ran a storming final leg to help the same GB quartet that won 4x100m gold at the European Championships – she was backed up by Asha Philip, Imani-Lara Lansiquot and Bianca Williams – repeat the trick once again.

Having got off to a promising start, GB got stronger and stronger and despite having work to do on her final leg, Asher-Smith breezed past a fading Salome Kora of Switzerland to bring it home.

Attention now turns to the second Diamond League finals event in Brussels on Friday, where CJ Ujah goes looking to defend his men’s 100m title in the same race as fellow Briton Reece Prescod.

Laura Muir and Laura Weightman will both compete in the 1500m final while Lorraine Ugen is another British interest in the long jump.

Elsewhere on Thursday, in the 400m, Matthew Hudson-Smith was unable to add further gloss to the European title he claimed in Berlin earlier this month as he finished recorded a third-place finish.

The 23-year-old got off to a fine start and came around the bend strongly but crossed the line in 44.95 seconds, with American Fred Kerley taking the win in 44.80.

Eilidh Doyle finished fifth in the 400m hurdles while Holly Bradshaw was joint-fourth in the pole vault.

Meanwhile, Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake was eighth in the 200m, Eilish McColgan and Melissa Courtney were 11th and 13th respectively in the 5000m, Charlie Da’Vall Grice was 11th in the 1500m and Morgan Lake finished 11th in the high jump. Sportsbeat 2018
