Day 3 Preview EYOWF

Team GB are in action across five of the six sports in which Great Britain is represented at the EYOWF in Brasov Romania.

Day three marks the start of the biathlon competition at the Cheile Gradistei venue in Fundata. GB’s trio of biathletes Sam Cairns (Kingussie), Lachlan Cowie (Inverness) and Robert Sircus (Kingussie) will all compete in the 12km individual.

The EYOWF is Cairns first international competition and he has turned to best friend and 2011 EYOWF alumni Scott Dixon for some advice before coming out to Brasov.

“My dream is to compete at an Olympics one day so to be going to this event is a nice little stepping stone to try and get me there,” he said. “In biathlon it’s all about being relaxed in the races. This is my first international competition and this will be as tough as I have ever faced but I find that exciting, I'm ready to compete and show what I can do.”

Maisie Potter (Bangor) also makes her 2013 EYOWF debut when she competes in the snowboard cross competition at the Snowboard Venue in Predeal.

Snowboard Team Leader James Foster said: “The course is good given the recent weather and snow conditions in Braşov. The Organising Committee have put together a solid course, which has held up after three hours of training so everything is looking good ahead of the start of the competition tomorrow. Maisie is looking strong and confident and is looking forward to tomorrow’s race. The EYOWF is a fantastic opportunity for Maisie to experience an Olympic event and a great step forward on her elite pathway.”

Just down the road from the snowboard venue, cross country skiers Sarah Hale and James Clugnet are back in action when they tackle the 5km and 7.5km classic race respectively.

The final sport in action of day three of the EYOWF is the boy’s alpine skiing which sees GB’s flag bearer Max Baggio (Harpenden), Billy Major (Cambridge), Charlie Rapaso (Lonodn), and Laurie Taylor (Basingstoke) all compete in the giant slalom. After watching teammate Darcie Mead compete earlier in the day they are all eager to get their competition started.

Rapaso said: “I am really looking forward to tomorrow’s race, it should be really good. The girls' shaped out well today so I am just excited to go out there and see what happens. Giant slalom is my best event. I’ll have a good start number but there are a lot of good guys competing out here so we will have to see how it goes tomorrow.”
