Coomes and Buckland slip to fifth in Japan

After a short dance routine that took them into day two in second place, Penny Coomes and Nick Buckland couldn’t maintain their form and slipped to fifth at the conclusion of the NHK Trophy in Osaka, Japan.

The duo, who placed tenth in the Winter Olympics, put in an impressive performance in the short dance that saw them trailing only to Canada’s Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje.

Their score of 60.49 was enough to hold off Russian duo Ksenia Monko and Kirill Khaliavin, who came in third with 59.70.

But the free dance was another story and their score of 77.39 left them down in sixth – Weaver and Poje solidifying their grip on the top-spot and Monko and Khaliavin finishing in second.

That meant the British duo slipped to fifth overall with a final score of 137.88 while the top three was rounded off by American pair Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker.
