Clancy gets Ed start for Glasgow

Ed Clancy will continue his transformation from endurance rider to sprinter as one of seven Olympic champions named in the Great Britain team for next month's Track World Cup in Glasgow.

Clancy, twice an Olympic champion in the four-kilometre team pursuit, will combine with Jason Kenny and Philip Hindes in the three-man, three-lap team sprint event at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. Kenny, Hindes and Hoy won Olympic gold in the event in London in August.

Also competing in the event will be world and Olympic team pursuit champions Laura Trott, Dani King, Joanna Rowsell and Steven Burke. British Cycling performance director Dave Brailsford said: "The period of time immediately after an Olympics is an interesting one for the team as it allows us to try out new line-ups and look at how the younger squad members are developing."

He added: "The men's team pursuit will be interesting for us in that respect, and I'm also looking forward to seeing how Ed gets on in the sprint events.

"Now that the London Olympics are behind us I'm hoping we can carry some of that momentum on into the World Cup and I know the whole team is looking forward to racing again in front of a home-crowd on our first step towards Rio."

Clancy's move to the sprint disciplines comes in anticipation of a possible Olympic return for the one-kilometre time-trial event Hoy won in Athens in 2004.

Burke and Andy Tennant, a world champion who was a non-riding reserve at the Olympics, are joined in the men's team pursuit squad by Track World Cup debutant Jon Dibben, Owain Doull, Simon Yates and Sam Harrison, who won World Championships bronze in the event in 2011. Joe Kelly is a reserve.

Completing the 15-rider group are Becky James and Jess Varnish, who will ride in the women's sprint events.
