Christie lands European Championship gold

Elise Christie’s 1000m gold was the highlight of a superb final day at the short track speed skating European Championships in Dresden, Germany.

Christie, who finished fourth over 1500m on Friday, cruised into Sunday’s final, where she beat Netherlands’ Jorien Ter Mors and Russian Tatiana Borodulina into second and third respectively.

It was a rare opportunity to get the better of Ter Mors, who was the only racer to finish above Christie in the tournament’s overall classification and condemned her to second place later on in the 3000m Super Final.

And it was Ter Mors’ Dutch relay team that beat Great Britain, made up of Christie, Charlotte Gilmartin, Alex Stanley and Kathryn Thomson, to gold on Sunday evening, forcing them to settle for silver.

Earlier in the day Gilmartin had reached the semi-finals of the 1000m, while Jack Whelbourne and Richard Shoebridge each got as far as the quarter-final stage.
