Charles edges out Skelton to take third

Peter Charles and Nick Skelton, two members of Great Britain's London 2012 gold medal-winning showjumping team, finished third and fourth respectively in the Rolex FEI World Cup qualifier at Olympia on Saturday.

Marc Houtzager, who was part of the Dutch team beaten to Olympic gold after a jump-off by the quartet of Charles, Skelton, Ben Maher and Scott Brash at Greenwich Park, claimed the top prize of just under £30,000, with Sweden's Malin Baryard-Johnsson second.

Charles and a recent addition to his string, Murka's Odie de Frevent, claimed third ahead of Skelton aboard his London 2012 ride Big Star.

Charles produced one of only three double clears and his performance came just three months after he underwent groin surgery.

Reflecting on an unforgettable year, Charles said: "This year has been what dreams are made of. I didn't think I was going to be fit enough to ride at this show. To do that today was really nice."
