Bronze for Varnish

Jess Varnish secured her first medal of the Track Cycling World Championships in Melbourne when she claimed a bronze medal in the women's 500m time-trial.

The 21-year-old finished fourth in the team sprint with Victoria Pendleton earlier in the competition but took third on the final day of the event as Australia's Anna Meares won her second gold medal in two days.

Meares triumphed in a world record of 33.010secs, with Germany's Miriam Welte (33.626) second and Varnish (33.999) third.

Dani King (36.153) was 23rd.
