Bronze for Walls in Berlin

Matthew Walls came home with bronze in the men's omnium at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Berlin.

The 21-year-old produced a phenomenal points race – the final event of the omnium – to climb up the rankings and clinch third place.

The Brit amassed a total of 117 points to claim bronze behind France’s Benjamin Thomas and the Netherlands’ Jan-Willem van Schip.

Walls was in second place after the scratch race but dropped down to fourth after the tempo race and fifth after the elimination.

However, a lap gained in the points race in the closing stages was crucial for Walls and the 20 points ensured Walls a place on the podium.

"It wasn't easy,” Walls said. “I came into the points race in fifth after having a shocker in the elimination and tempo races, so I was a bit far down.

"But I knew if it went my way, I could get a medal and it did. This is a top-class field. There are at least 10 riders that could win on a good day."

Elsewhere Elinor Barker and Neah Evans teamed up for the women’s madison and came away with sixth place, after the latter was involved in a crash.
