Bronze for Britain at Gymnastics World Championships

Ellie Downie bounced back from a shaky start in the Gymnastics World Championships all-around team final to produce a sensational final vault and seal bronze for Great Britain.

For most of Tuesday's final in Glasgow it looked like the Brits would narrowly miss a spot on the podium until Downie's brilliant effort handed the country it's best-ever team finish.

The six-strong team achieved their main goal of Rio qualification of Sunday but there was no sign of complacency as they took to the floor in Glasgow.

They were slow out of the blocks however with Downie falling on the uneven bars while the USA set a blistering pace – the Americans wouldn't slow down on their way to gold.

But slowly the British team of Downie, older sister Becky, Claudia Fragapane, Kelly Simm, Ruby Harrold and AmyTinkler grew into the occasion and found some composure on the beam before Downie, Tinkler and Fragapane put the team within striking distance heading into the vault.

With Russia standing in their way it would take a flawless effort from the Brits and they delivered just that – Fragapane's 14.833 setting the tone for things to come.

Tinkler was next and her 15.083 meant Downie's effort could secure an historic achievement.

And she executed perfectly for a 15.133 to give Britain 172.380 and bronze by less than half a point on their Russian rivals.

“We didn't feel that pressure really because we just did what we always do in training because we perform like that in the gym,” said Downie. “We were obviously emotional when it was all done because you realise what's happened and it's crazy.

“The crowd were right behind us and I could hear them screaming and the girls were just giving us confidence going into those vaults.  “To come out with the scores that we did was absolutely amazing and just shows that the all the hard work has paid off.”

Wednesday sees the men look to match their female counterparts while for Fragapane there is still the small matter of the individual floor final still to come.

And she says she will be going into it relaxed knowing that the team is safely on their way to Rio as World Championship bronze medallists.

“It means the world to have done this and I will never forget this day, there is so much emotion and hard work that has gone into it,” said Fragapane.

“Ellie made a little mistake on bars and some people could crumble straight away but we picked her back up.

“We said never say never and anything can happen and she went on to do a good beam, floor and vault so that was incredible.” Sportsbeat 2015
