Britain secure bronze in Hamburg

Despite the absence of London 2012 Olympic medal winners Jonny and Alistair Brownlee, Great Britain secured bronze at the triathlon mixed relay World Championships in Hamburg.

Vicky Holland gave Britain an early lead, despite a fall during the transition from the bike to the run.

But they slipped back to fourth place after the second leg from Gordon Benson, fresh from securing European Games gold in Baku.

Non Stanford fired Britain back to the top of the pile, gaining ground with a brilliant effort in the water.

But Mark Buckingham was caught as France claimed gold and Australia won silver.

And the 30-year-old admitted the gruelling 1.6km run proved the difference.

“I just struggled so much on the run,” Buckingham said.

“All four of us have just come down from altitude and it was just a really hard race.”
