Britain beaten by Poland

Great Britain women's handball team went down to a spirited 29-20 defeat to Poland in their Euro 2012 Group Three qualifier on Sunday afternoon.

Going into the game on the back of a 33-20 defeat in Thursday's reverse fixture, GB trailed just 7-6 midway through the first half.

But a sloppy end to the opening period, with a number of costly misplaced passes, saw Poland pull away to lead 16-8 at the break.

Jesper Holmris' side rallied in the second period and matched their physically superior opponents for long periods, but could not claw back the deficit.

Lyn Byl top scored with four goals, with Lynn McCafferty and Kathryn Fudge scoring three apiece.

Poland, who were inspired by six-goal left winger Agnieszka Kocela, still have a chance of qualifying for the tournament in Holland later this year.

However, four defeats in four games means Britain cannot qualify and they will use the remaining two group games against Montenegro and Russia in May and June to prepare further for their participation in this summer's Olympics.
