Britain’s sailors toasted eight medals overall from the Olympic test event in Rio with Stephen Park content with where his team are two years out from the Games but determined for even more in 2016.

Four medals had been garnered heading into the final day of the Aquece Rio International Regatta and that tally doubled to eight as the Laser, Laser Radial and men’s and women’s 470 fleets conducted their medal races.

Nick Thompson didn’t sail the Laser medal race after suffering injury following a collision a day earlier but, while he was unable to challenge for gold, he dropped just one place to claim bronze.

Alison Young, sidelined from competition for the last ten months following illness, claimed silver in the Laser Radial in her first outing in anger after a second place in the medal race.

Luke Patience and Elliot Willis were also silver medallists in the men’s 470, despite protests, while the women’s duo of Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark were also runners-up.

Giles Scott was Britain’s only gold medallist at the regatta in Rio in the Finn however Olympic sailing manager Park knows there is time on his side to ensure they improve at the Games themselves in 2016.

“It’s been a fantastic end to the first Rio test event,” he said. “Winning eight medals in seven events of the ten that we compete in has been very pleasing.

“It’s certainly a work in progress and of course we’d like to win more gold medals than we’ve won this week.

“But we were in there competing for gold medals certainly in four of the events and to be racing out for the podium in every single one of the ten events is a fantastic place to be.

“We’ve still got two years to go to the Games itself and the progress we’ve made over the two years since 2012 has been substantial.

“We’re really looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead to improve on those performances and try and make those medals a little bit shinier than perhaps some of them have been this time around.”
