Brilliant Barker secures gold at Track World Championships

Elinor Barker admitted she was "seeing stars" on her way to winning the women's points race at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Berlin.

It was Great Britain’s only gold of the competition but added to the medal success of Matthew Walls, the women’s pursuit team and men’s sprint team over the five days.

Barker secured her fifth world track title after becoming the only rider to gain two laps in the points race, finishing ahead of United States’ Jennifer Valente and Norway’s Antina Yvonne.

"It felt surreal after gaining the lap. There were still 15 laps to go,” Barker said.

"I wanted to have some more energy to at least get involved in another sprint after I got a lap, but I had absolutely nothing left, I was seeing stars.

"I couldn't even entirely tell who the four at the front were, I just had my fingers crossed that they didn't get the lap or anything.

"The plan would have been to have a few more beans at the end but it went as well as it possibly could."

It was Barker’s second medal of the championship having clinched team pursuit silver on Thursday.

The 25-year-old, who won team pursuit gold at Rio 2016, will now hope to add to her medal tally when she heads to Tokyo 2020.

“It always feels pretty good (to win a world title),” Barker said.

“It’s not irrelevant that (the points race) is not an Olympic event but it doesn’t make it feel any less incredible.”

Barker’s gold was Great Britain's only success on the final day as Olympian Katy Marchant agonisingly missed out on a place in the women’s keirin final.

Her semi-final was decided by a photo finish but she was edged out into fourth place.
