Bower and Banks strike gold at European Championships

Great Britain’s divers struck gold for the second day in succession at the European Championships after Ruby Bower and Phoebe Banks triumphed in the 10m platform synchro.

With Bower just 17 and Banks only 16, the duo were the youngest in the event but the City of Leeds pair defied their age to take gold by 2.19 points.

Finishing on 299.19, their closest competition came from Russia’s Yulia Timoshinina and Valeriia Belova – who scored 297.00 – with Ukraine’s Valeriia Liulko and Sofiia Lyskun taking bronze after amassing 288.96 points.

And while Bower, who admitted to being shocked by the result, could have been expected to suffer from nerves, her and Banks kept their calm to score a best dive of 72.90 for their front 3.5 somersaults, piked.

"This was an exciting competition with a completely surprising end for us,” said Bower. “As the youngest duo in this competition, we would never have expected to win, especially since this was one of our first synchro competitions together.

“But we also have the same dives in our individual programmes. So it was not too difficult for us to repeat that in the synchro competition."

Elsewhere in Kiev Freddie Woodward qualified for the final of the 1m springboard competition, and eventually finished 11th with a score of 330.30.
