BOA mourns the passing of Bill Slater CBE

The British Olympic Association is saddened to hear of the passing of former England footballer and Helsinki 1952 Olympian Bill Slater CBE aged 91.

Bill, who was capped 32 times by England, played in Great Britain's only match during the Helsinki Games and scored one of their extra time goals in the 5-3 defeat by Luxembourg.

At club level he enjoyed spells at Blackpool and Brentford but was most successful at Wolverhampton Wanderers, making over 300 appearances for the club.

Sir Hugh Robertson, Chairman of the BOA said: "Everybody in the British Olympic family will be desperately sorry to hear the sad news that Bill Slater has passed away. He was an iconic player for Wolves in the post war years and, of course, competed for Great Britain at the 1952 Olympic Games. Our thoughts are with his daughter Barbara and their family."
