Baku 2015: Bevan targets even more in individual finals

Gymnast Brinn Bevan insists he will go into the individual finals with no fear after making the all-around and pommel final in Baku.

Monday saw the culmination of the men’s and women’s team finals with the top two scores from the three-strong team deciding the overall total.

Bevan lead from the front for the men, top scoring with 86.264 as he and teammates Frank Baines and Nile Wilson placed eighth overall on 171.362 – Russia taking the gold on 178.963.

It was a similar story in the women’s standings too, with the Russia gymnasts on top while Great Britain came home eighth on 107.964.

Bevan’s score was also enough to place him sixth in the qualifying for Wednesday’s all-around individual final and fourth best for the pommel final on Saturday.

“Overall we're pretty pleased with our performance under the circumstances,” he said. “Frank has been suffering with a wrist injury which limited him to vault and floor so that meant every routine from me and Nile had to count.

“We're proud of how we stuck together and worked as a team. Personally I’m really looking forward to the all-around final up against some of the best gymnast in the world in my first year as a senior.

“I know I can go out there and express myself, maybe try some more difficult routines and see where I stand.”

Kelly Simm was Team GB’s top performing female with her score of 53.299 placing her eighth under the ‘one gymnast per country’ ruling, while she also goes into the vault final with the fifth best qualifying score.

Georgina Hockenhull will also go in the beam final having placed sixth in qualifying with teammate Charlie Fellows first reserve for the uneven bars, and Simm in a similar position on the floor.

And the latter is confident she can step her performances up even further when it comes to bidding for success in the individual events.

“The crowd and atmosphere has been incredible all competition,” she said. “I'm happy with my own performance and in the all-around final I know I can step it up again particularly on bars where I really want to show everyone my unique combinations.

“The experience so far has been incredible and the support from our teammates in the arena is great.

“We did really well as a team, supported each other and fought through,” said Simm after the culmination of qualifying.”
