Asher-Smith takes 200m second at Rabat Diamond League

Dina Asher-Smith ran superbly on Friday night at the Rabat Diamond League but had to settle for second in the 200m after being pipped to the post by Shaunae Miller-Uibo.

In Morocco for the ninth Diamond League meeting of the season, the 22-year-old Londoner raced a superb bend to enjoy a clear lead at 150m.

Current Olympic 400m champion Miller-Uibo, of the Bahamas, was in no mood to be defeated though and ran down the Briton in the closing metres to win in 22.29seconds, with Asher-Smith clocking 22.40s into a slight headwind.

The result represents Asher-Smith’s third top-two Diamond League finish in 2018, while fellow Brit Jodie Williams finished sixth in 23.26s.

There was more British success on the track in the 400m men, where Matthew Hudson-Smith claimed third behind Qatar’s Abdalleleh Haroun and Jamaica’s Akeem Bloomfield, second and first respectively.

Bloomfield’s 44.33s sets a new meeting record while Hudson-Smith finished with a time of 44.79s, just one hundredth of a second ahead of Luguelin Santos.

The USA took the top four places in the men’s 100m, with Christian Coleman top of the pile with a run of 9.98s.

That left the British challenge to Reece Prescod and CJ Ujah, with Prescod clocking 10.09s to finish fifth and Ujah running 10.19s to take sixth.

Elsewhere, Charles Da’Vall Grice ran a season’s best 3:34.20 to finish fifth in the men’s 1500m and Lynsey Sharp also recorded her best run of the season to finish seventh in the women’s 800m.

Eilish McColgan was also seventh in the 5000m women whilst Morgan Lake cleared 1.90m in the high jump, finishing fifth.
