Asher-Smith and Williams shine in Lausanne

Dina Asher-Smith claimed silver at the Lausanne Diamond League as a host of British athletes registered season's bests among a star-studded field in Switzerland.

The triple European champion delivered a season’s best time of 10.91 seconds, despite a slow start, to come second behind a blistering performance from Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

The Jamaican won comfortably in 10.74s – just a thousandth of a second off the world lead time and two thousandths behind the meeting record time.

Asher-Smith’s silver adds to her second place at the Rome Diamond League last month which followed consecutive 200m triumphs – but the European champion knows there is still more in the tank as she prepares for her home meet.

“My coach will be frustrated about my start. I was annoyed when I crossed the finish line,” Asher-Smith said.

“I'm obviously not in the best shape I can be. At the Diamond League in London I want to run as fast as I can and win. I have a season's best though so I can't complain.”

Jodie Williams also finished second as she was pipped to the victory in the women’s 200m by America’s Gabrielle Thomas.

Williams had led on the bend but Thomas fought back strongly down the straight to win in 22.69s with Williams finishing closely behind in a season’s best 22.75s.

Elsewhere, Laviai Nielsen finished a strong fourth in the women’s 400m with a season’s best time of 51.31s.

Andrew Pozzi also ended up one place off the podium but registered a season’s best 13.28s as he came fourth in the men’s 100m hurdles, pipped by three thousandths of a second to third by Jamaica’s Ronald Levy.

The trend of season’s bests continued with Guy Learmonth as he finished tenth in the men’s 800m with a time of 1:45.86 while Commonwealth and European bronze medallist Jake Wightman similarly earned his best time of 2019 as he came ninth in the men’s 1500m in 3:34.40.
