Asher-Smith and Johnson-Thompson make SPOTY shortlist

Dina Asher-Smith and Katarina Johnson-Thompson have both been nominated for BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2019.

The announcement comes just under two months after their respective heroics at the World Athletics Championships in Doha, where Asher-Smith became the first-ever female British sprinter to win a world 200m title while Johnson-Thompson ended her wait for her first global outdoor title by powering to heptathlon gold.

For Asher-Smith, who was also nominated for the award in 2018, the announcement comes at the end of another remarkable year on the track, the 23-year-old having also claimed 100m and 4x100m relay silver in Doha after being crowned 100m champion in the Diamond League in the summer.

Johnson-Thompson joins her in the shortlist after also making headlines in Doha after running the 800m in a personal best time of 2:07.26 seconds to seal heptathlon gold, breaking Jessica Ennis-Hill’s British record in the process.

The winner will be announced on Sunday 15 December in Aberdeen. Sportsbeat 2019
