Ansley eyeing Dutch encounter as England progress in EuroHockey Championships

Giselle Ansley is relishing the chance to lock horns with world number one side and rivals The Netherlands again after defending champions England booked their semi-final place at the EuroHockey Championships in Amsterdam.

Ansley and Jo Hunter were on the scoresheet in England's 2-0 win over Scotland in their final Pool B match and their second-half double ensured the defending champions finished top of their pool and set up a semi-final showdown with the Dutch – a repeat of two years ago.

After both sides had struggled to convert chances on a tricky pitch, Hunter astutely deflected home Anna Toman's cross to break the deadlock before Ansley sealed the win with a late drag-flick.

And Ansley, buoyed by her 100th appearance for her country – remained confident that England can go all the way and defend their European crown.

"We're not going to shy away from the fact that we're defending champions. We're actually quite enjoying that part of the pressure," said the Surbiton player.

"We're going to have a tough semi-final by the looks of it, but we've done it before when we played the Dutch in the semi-final in 2013 so we're looking forward to it.

"We had a lot of the ball, but we just had to stick to our processes and we knew something would come of the end.

"We didn't train much on here before we started – they were still doing bits to the ground. But I think we've got to go away and work on our basics, we have to be trapping that ball.

"We just had to keep playing our way. When you play Scotland, you have to try and take the emotion out of the game and I think we did that pretty well for large parts of the game.

"We would have obviously liked a few more outcomes, but to win 2-0 we're pretty happy."

Ansley had the best chance of the first quarter, but could not get the better of Scottish keeper Amy Gibson, who pulled off a host of stunning saves to keep her side in the match.

The goalkeeper was Scotland's star of the first half as she came to her country's rescue on several occasions, producing several outstanding stops, with her most memorable being a double save from Sophie Bray and Hannah Martin's follow-up shot.

England improved after the break and ramped up the pressure as Toman delivered a fierce ball into the cross circle, which was pounced on by Hunter to send the ball into the roof of the goal.

With the momentum swinging England's way, the 2013 European champions went on to dominate the third quarter and nearly extended their lead through Bray, who fired wide.

And despite a scrappy last fifteen minutes which saw four cards, England put the game to bed when Ansley capitalised on a penalty corner to convert a low drag-flick.

Scotland now enter Pool C, a pool of four teams where the bottom two will be relegated to EuroHockey Championship II.

Speaking after her side's defeat, Gibson said: "It's always a tough competition. It's one of the toughest continental championships in the world and it's going to be tough for us to stay up but we've got the team here to do it."
