Simon Amor says his squad left everything on the field as they fell to a 28-17 defeat to Fiji in the final of the Dubai Sevens World Series.
Amor’s troops started the day well with a 14-7 victory over Argentina in the dying minutes setting up a semi-final clash with the USA.
That proved to be a dramatic battle too as England eventually came through 24-19 in injury time.
But it was a bridge too far against a powerful Fijian side despite taking an early 7-0 lead.
Three tries in a matter of minutes saw Fiji race ahead though and Phil Burgess’ late try was a mere consolation.
“I’m disappointed that we lost the final but certainly not with how we went about it – the squad gave it everything,” said Amor.
"We have some young and inexperienced guys playing in their first big tournament and I’m delighted with the effort that they put in and their attitude throughout the whole weekend has been excellent. We are in a good place that we can build upon.
“We’ve worked very hard on developing mental strength, character and culture and this group work very hard for each other which first and foremost is what you ask for as a coach. I really am delighted for them reaching the final.”
Elsewhere Wales saw off Canada 24-14 to progress to the bowl semi-final with Scotland who had earlier beaten Portugal 21-14.
It was the Scots who then came out on top 17-14 but they lost out in the final 24-14 to France.
