Agonising fourth for Daley in World Cup finale

Olympic bronze medallist Tom Daley had to settle for an agonising fourth place as diving’s World Cup came to a close with the 10m platform final in Shanghai.

The 20-year-old was well placed to follow in the wake of British teammate Jack Laugher after progressing from the semi-final to the final in third place with a total of 504.55.

Laugher claimed 3m springboard bronze on the penultimate day but Daley fell a place after his final, placing fourth with a score of 470.35 this time around.

Ivan Garcia of Mexico claimed bronze with 504.90 as Yang Jian got the better of Chinese teammate Qiu Bo to take gold as part of the home nation one-two.

Daley’s performance does bode well ahead of Glasgow 2014 with the Olympic bronze medallist from London 2012 the best placed Commonwealth diver in Shanghai.

However the next best, Malaysian Tze Liang Ooi, wasn’t too far behind Daley as he placed fifth with an overall total of 464.85.
