Achara delight as Britain win on return to Olympic Park

Britain’s men enjoyed a successful return to the Olympic Park as they defeated Puerto Rico 61-55 in their EuroBasket warm-up – and Kieron Achara insists it’s onwards and upwards.

Back in the Olympic Park for the first time since London 2012 last summer, where they defeated China in the temporary Basketball Arena, Britain were too strong for Puerto Rico in the Copper Box.

Achara led the scoring with 13 points, in addition to 11 rebounds and six blocks, on his 50th GB appearance as new head coach Joe Prunty began his tenure in perfect fashion.

Britain don’t begin their EuroBasket campaign in Slovenia until next month but Achara, part of the Olympic team last summer, admits the signs are already looking good.

“It was pleasing to get the win,” said Achara. “Right now, it’s all about getting the results and understanding each other on the court.

“The mood has been great and we look to continue the momentum as we head to EuroBasket. It’s a great feeling [getting 50 caps].

“From being a rookie on the team to being a veteran, it’s a fantastic honour. We have a great group of guys here and it’s great to be a part of it.”
