The 1900 Summer Olympics, today officially known as the Games of the II Olympiad, was celebrated in Paris, France. No opening or closing ceremonies were held. Women took part in the games for the first time and sailor Hélène de Pourtalès became the first female Olympic champion. Most of the winners in 1900 did not receive medals, but were given cups or trophies.
It was the second appearance for Great Britain, after having participated in the inaugural 1896 Games.
