About the Games

The 1980 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXII Olympiad, was held in Moscow in the Soviet Union.

The hosts won 87 gold medals, the East Germany claimed 47, and Bulgaria eight. Excluding the East Germans, Soviet athletes won more gold medals than the combined totals of the other 78 competing teams. Despite the absence of the sporting powers USA, Germany and Japan, there was superb athletic competition, with British athletes to the fore.
