Los Angeles 1932
The 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles were officially known as the Games of the X Olympiad. An unprecedented crowd of 100,000 witnessed the opening on 30 July.
For the first time, male athletes were housed in a single Olympic Village, and at the victory ceremonies, the medal winners had their national flag raised and stood on a podium. Official automatic timing was introduced for the track events, and the photo-finish camera, and Los Angeles set the standard, establishing a fortnight as the duration of the games. Previously, no Summer Olympic celebration in the twentieth century had been shorter than 79 days.
