The 1956 Winter Games were held in the Italian resort in the Dolomites, the army had to shovel in artificial snow to counter the lack of the real thing. New television technology made sure these were the first games broadcast to an international television audience. The Olympic Oath was sworn by a female athlete for the first time, skier Giuliana Minuzzo of Italy.
When competition started the Soviets announced their arrival in the Winter Games arena with a bang, their speed skaters won three of the four events, their men's hockey team put an end to Canada's long domination. 20-year-old Austrian plumber and future movie star, Toni Sailer became the first Alpine skier to win three Olympic gold medals.
