A Day in the Life of... Chemmy Alcott - Alpine Skier

There is a huge misconception that an injured athlete needs distraction from boredom. I remember back in 2010 when I had my first big time out. Amongst other things I bought guitar learning lessons, dvds to improve my french and wool to crochet hundreds of hats. And even though since then my relationship with any set of my six pairs of crutches has been a close one, I have had NO time to indulge in such investments.

For every minute that I am not either sweating in the elite sportspersons ‘hurt-tank’ training room at Surrey Sports Park or visiting my friend and physio who i credit with always patching me up at Balance Physio in Clapham or trying to watch the latest episode of Homeland (at home!) spinning and pushing watts on the bike; I am plugged into some kind of healing tool.

Friends who haven’t visited my home for awhile always find it exciting to quiz me on my latest gadget.

A typical day would be something like this:

Wake up, hydrate then start the healing day with my nutritious oatmeal which i get from Germany (Jentschura) filled with good carbs and sustainable energy which keeps my hunger at bay for awhile (no small feat). I even eat special foods to help my ‘hero’ leg become stronger - ground almonds for natural anti-inflammatory, greek yoghurt for protein, chia seeds for maintaining wellbeing, kale the super food and super healer, sesame seeds again to reduce swelling, Udos oil for general energy and health needs and so so much more.

After indulging in my vice and caffeine fix of a strong coffee I get right at it by starting the day strapping my leg into my Game Ready Icing and Compression. This means I can combine digesting my breakfast with a few work emails and preparing my leg for the days daily load.

Then its off to Guildford where I am fortunate enough to have a trainer. Some athletes need a trainer as they struggle to push themselves without - I am the opposite. James’ role with me is to stop me from pushing myself too hard!

I don’t waste any idle time on the journey home as I normally use this for bone healing with an Exogen placed exactly on the fracture site whilst topping up my muscles with a protein shake.

A quick turn around at home includes brown rice (the rice cooker is my best friend) and salmon with salad.

Taking the train up to London gives me my second ‘work’ half hour for the day where i reply to any emails or do interviews.

Balance isn’t just a fab place because Claire is there - they also have a neat bit of kit called an Anti G trainer (a running machine which has a vacuum capsule so that you can chose how much of your body weight you exercise with which is great from the very first days of rehab to almost the back to ski days!) So after an hour of lunging, running and jumping in the Anti G I head to Claire to make sure we are right on track with daily improvements and help to manage the swelling and update my weekly physio exercises.

Once home I eat a quick snack before embarking on my tour de france (well at this point in the day that is what it seems like to me!) training session of the day

After stretching I have my last end of day routine to flush my legs and control the swelling in my leg with a double whammy of again using the Game Ready and then plugging in to the fabulous Normatec (giant inflatable astronaut leggins which pulsate and squeeze in small capsules to push any lactic acid upwards so that it can be easily gotten rid of.)

By this point I normally have enough energy for a lazy dinner of a stir-fry before I collapse into bed, where i read some chick flick until my left eye closes (my right has more fight and usually lasts a couple more pages!)
