Charlotte Gilmartin: Now I’m ready to make my Olympic debut

I didn’t qualify for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games but I came close and I’ve taken massive steps forward since, which gives me great confidence now that I am going to Sochi 2014.

I would be pleased if I could just come away with a good performance. I’m doing the 500m and the 1500m and a good performance for me that would be getting in the medal zone and being competitive with everyone out there.

It feels like making my Olympic debut is a long time coming, I didn’t qualify last time but I came very close. So it has been more of a six-year run for me than a four-year run, and I am really looking forward to it.

I have taken a massive step forward in both of the last two seasons. I came close enough last time for Vancouver 2010 but at that point I don’t think I was really ready to go to the Games.

At that point I hadn’t really achieved that much but this time around I have got top-ten results, top-eight results, top-six results and it is definitely much more exciting.

I believe I can compete with everyone at the Games and not just simply turn up. I have been with the British short track team for seven years now and when I first joined it was very minimal.

But over that seven years there has been a phenomenal amount of change. There is so much more support for all of us.

We can have things like physios whenever we need them and stuff like that. Being able to have that kind of thing there – you can’t put a price on that – it is great to have that there.

There are a number of things as well and the whole programme has grown so much.
